He looked from one villainous face to another, and even in that brief glance he was certain that the man who was called Lucas Style was not among them. They were brutes, that was all, and there was plainly not one of them gifted with brain enough to be a leader.
"He's inside, an' you can't see him," Mitt said gruffly. "He's got the cursed fever on him again, an' he's like a devil. What you want with him, anyway?"
"That I will tell him," the detective answered quietly; then made a bold move.
If these ruffians had come from England they would probably know his name, and the mention of it might have some effect upon them.
"I am Sexton Blake," he added calmly, as he stepped on to the verandah.
The jaws of Sam Mitt, Pete Carron, and Nick Jute dropped badly; and while they were still staring at the detective in blank amazement he passed them and stepped boldly into the building.
In the big livine-room, which he had chosen to sleep in because there was more air there than in the sleeping-quarters, Plummer lay on a narrow bedstead, his face ashen, great beads of sweat forming on his face and forehead and dripping on to the clothes. The beard, moustache, and wig that he wore had very much changed his appearance, but perhaps it was the ravages that the fever had made upon him that, for the time being, made it quite impossible for Sexton Blake to recognise his old opponent.
Beside the bed was a small table, on on which lay a pistol and a bottle of whisky.
The sick man moaned, and twisted his body round restlessly, so that he looked out into the room and saw the man who had entered it. Until then his glazed eyes had been almost unseeing; but now an expression of the most awful terror leapt into them, and he snatched at the pistol that lay on the table.
Sexton Blake was too quick for him, however, and the table and its contents crashed to the floor before a well-directed kick.
"You!" Plummer gasped, in his weakness unable to control his terror.
It was Sexton Blake's turn to look surprised, for never to the best of his belief had he seen the man on this bed before.
Before he could speak, however, Plummer had taken a hard grip at his nerves. Once more he was face to face with his great enemy, and again it was when he was within reach almost of a fortune.
In two weeks he had prepared to leave for England to claim his share of the profits that would then have been made by Felix Gane and John Leval. He had carried out his part of the bargain well, and by the sheer brutality of himself and his ruffianly companions he had been able to show the independent expert sent from England an unprecedented amount of rubber. Much of it had been poached from over the Belgian border, but Plummer had been quite ready to take all risks to bring about ultimate success.
